INTERVIEW

  • How did you get started in T-shirt Designing and what was your first design?

I first made a “Sons of Gygax” mashup tee for Comicon, for personal use. I got so many positive comments that I started selling them on Redbubble, until I was informed that “Gygax” was a trademarked name. So I don’t sell that one any more, but it’s how I got started.

  • Any advice for aspiring designers?

Keep practicing and experimenting to see what works. I’ve been drawing all my life, but I noticed that my work started to really improve once I began to draw with an audience in mind and started to research what was already out there.

  • Any highlights in your career such as prestigious awards, mentions, and recognition?

I’ve had some of my art stolen by bootleg sites so I guess that’s an honor, in a way.

  • Do you have any rivalries friendly or not? If so with who?

Unfriendly rivalry with Teechip, Sunfrog, etc. I suspect that the art thieves have made more money off my work than I have, simply because they’re more adept at advertising. I would love to see these places shut down for good.

  • Are you a dog person or a cat person?

Definitely a cat person.

  • Do you have any other skills or talents besides art?

Yes, but those are classified. šŸ™‚

  • Do you look up to any one in the T-shirt Biz?

BeastPop, Jimiyo, Khallion, MeganLara, Zerobriant, many others

  • If you could change one thing about the world what would it be?

I would have people spend one hour learning logic and critical thinking to offset each hour spent in church or Sunday school.

  • If you could have one superpower what would it be?

Teleportation. I love to travel but don’t always have the time.

  • If you could keep one thing about the world what would it be?

Art and free expression

  • If you have the ability to bring back any T.V. Show with fresh episodes but only one, what would it be?

Firefly would be tempting, but I’d really love to see another season of Deadwood

  • Marvel or DC or Other?

Marvel over DC, but not terribly into comics in general

  • What are your favorite fandoms?

Cthulhu, Dungeons and Dragons, heavy metal, classical mythology and folklore

  • What Are Your Inspirations?

Everyone who fights against corrupt authority or tried to create beauty in the world

  • What is your favorite accredited charity?

ACLU, Planned Parenthood, American Humanist Association, The Satanic Temple

  • What software do you use for making designs? Any drawing tablets?

I use paint.NET, but someday I’d like to upgrade tp Adobe Illustrator and get a Cintiq.

  • Would like to shout out to other artists?

Art, yo!

NTERVIEW

  • How did you get started in T-shirt Designing and what was your first design?
I started submitting designs to Shirt Woot’s derby years ago. It’s a great place for a newbie shirt designer to hone their skills.
  • Any advice for aspiring designers?
Don’t ever use the “drop shadow” or “outer glow” effects until you’re an experienced designer. šŸ™‚
  • Any highlights in your career such as prestigious awards, mentions, and recognition?
I have a trophy from Shirt Woot. It’s pretty sweet. I think it was for “Typography design of the year.”
  • Do you have any rivalries friendly or not? If so with who?
No. I’m not very rivalrous (Is that a word? Spell check says it’s not, but I think it is)
  • Are you a dog person or a cat person?
I’m allergic to cats, so I guess I’d be a dog person.
  • Do you have any other skills or talents besides art?
I can sing the theme song to pretty much every television sitcom from the 80’s and early 90’s.
  • If you could have one superpower what would it be?
Maybe flying. In my dreams, I can always fly. It’s a given. When I dream fly, it’s always like how Mario would swim in the old nintendo games, though. Bloop, bloop, bloop. It’s not very cool.
  • Marvel or DC or Other?
Neither. I think superheros are kind of cheesy and weird. I kind of like X-Men, because their mutant backstory makes sense to me and their world is kind of neat. I don’t know if that’s Marvel or DC or “Other” though.
  • What are your favorite fandoms?
I’m going to be honest here and say that I’m not 100% sure what makes something a “fandom.” I like cookies. And I just finished watching Lost Girl, which was pretty good. Is there a Lost Girl and cookies fandom?
  • What is your favorite accredited charity?
Two of my best friends run a nonprofit for autism families (The Tommy Foundation in Lancaster, PA). That’s my favorite one. šŸ™‚
  • What software do you use for making designs? Any drawing tablets?
Mostly photoshop. I have an old Cintiq 12 and a new iPad Pro (which I haven’t had time to really use yet, but Procreate is a neat simple app for drawing).
  • Would like to shout out to other artists?
    Hey, other artists! šŸ˜‰

Biography

I’m a designer, based in Derbyshire in the UK, and I’ve not been doing this for very long! I’ve been drawing for many years but have only recently branched out into T-shirt design (2016) and in my day-to-day life I’m a librarian.

I likeĀ to create vector illustrations and prefer portraiture, taking inspiration from popular culture, and basically things I love!

Notes

INTERVIEW

  • How did you get started in T-shirt Designing and what was your first design?

I started with Redbubble in October 2016, and I uploaded a couple of designs that I had made previously for an illustration course “Lady of the Lake” and “Midsummer Night’s Dream”, but the first image I designed purely for the T-shirt was the “Strange” Doctor Strange image. I work mostly with vectors and I specialise mainly in portraits. I joined Neatoshop and Teepublic more recently.

  • Any advice for aspiring designers?

I suppose I should put here advice about following trends and finding out what would do well in the market, but I tend to just design based on things that I like and I am inspired by, with the main aim being to design things that I would buy myself. (This has it’s downside, as I end up buying a lot of my stuff, wiping out a lot of my profit!). Also, just to keep drawing, I’m always finding new ways of drawing things and Ā more about using the software.

  • Any highlights in your career such as prestigious awards, mentions, and recognition?

I’ve had illustrations printed in a Medical Journal before, but not really images I’d like to put on a t-shirt! Other than that I’m fairly new to this at time of writing. Hopefully I’ll one day see someone famous wearing one of my designs!

  • Do you have any rivalries friendly or not? If so with who?

I don’t think I’ve managed to upset anyone just yet! I’d hope rivalry would be friendly if there were any. I’m not very good in a fight.

  • Are you a dog person or a cat person?

I’ve had both, but at the moment I have cats, so I should say cat. Dogs are more loyal obviously, but my cats are both a bit batty (Bengals) and love them to bits!

  • Do you have any other skills or talents besides art?

I’ve got a music degree but I don’t play much anymore. (I used to play bass guitar.)

  • Do you look up to any one in the T-shirt Biz?

I’m always seeing designs that I think “God that’s brilliant”, but not one particular artist. I bought a few from Redbubble before I designed for them. I prefer the designs where some effort has gone in, not so keen on the text only/ photo image designs.

  • If you could change one thing about the world what would it be?

I’d like to get rid of cruelty to animals and children, get rid of our current government, stop wars and also make physics work differently so that the more calories you eat, the thinner you get.

  • If you could have one superpower what would it be?

Knowing what TV show someone has been in before, without having to check on IMDB

  • What would be your mandatory weakness in respect to the one superpower?

I’d know what TV show they had been in, but it would only be one, and they might have been in other things and that would then annoy me, and I’d have to check IMDB. A bit of a pointless superpower in that respect.

  • If you could keep one thing about the world what would it be?

Charity shops!

  • If you have the ability to bring back any T.V. Show with fresh episodes but only one, what would it be?

Father Ted, but with the original Father Ted, so that’s not going to happen sadly.

  • Marvel or DC or Other?

You’s think Marvel with the Doctor Strange design, but I like the work of Alan Moore, so I’d have to say DC for Watchmen etc (but also his independent publisher work)

  • What are your favorite fandoms?

The obvious ones, love Sherlock, Doctor Who, Supernatural, but I’m a big fan of British comedy programmes, as you might be able to tell from my designs!

  • What Are Your Inspirations?

In terms of design ideas, comedy, cult movies but in terms of art, I love the classics and realism of the renaissance and I’m a big fan of art nouveau. I like the work of Echo Chernik.

  • What is your favorite accredited charity?

RSPCA

  • What software do you use for making designs? Any drawing tablets?

I use Adobe Illustrator mainly, I bluff my way around it mainly, just stick to the simple vector drawing functions. I use Photoshop to edit initial collages to work from and I have a Wacom Cintiq. I also have a Wacom intuos that I use with my laptop, but I prefer to draw onto the screen itself.

  • Would like to shout out to other artists?

I don’t really know any, as I’m a bit of a recluse. I’ll say hi to Echo Chernik though! You may never see this but I love your work!

Notes

INTERVIEW

How did you get started in T-shirt Designing and what was your first design?

I’ve doodled my way through life, mostly when I should have been doing other things! It got bad enough that graphic design seemed like a good career choice. Once I discovered geeky T-shirts online it seemed like my love of sci-fi and doodling had always been destined to come together. My first successful design was a warning sign that might have been found in the death star trench.

Any advice for aspiring designers?

Never stop! And of course do something that you love doing. Too many people try and come up with designs that they think will be popular, but you can always tell when someone loves what they do.

Any highlights in your career such as prestigious awards, mentions, and recognition?

For me,Ā every time I get an email saying someone has bought one of my designs is a highlight.

Do you have any rivalries friendly or not? If so with who?

Not really! I’m a pretty easy going person and it just feels like a lot of effort to have a rivalry when you could just be nice to each other.

Are you a dog person or a cat person?

I would be both if I had the time and effort!

Do you have any other skills or talents besides art?

I can juggle a bit and I know a decentĀ amount of ridiculous and useless facts.

Do you look up to any one in the T-shirt Biz?

When I first started I was lucky enough to get to know a few great artists that I still chat to on Facebook. It doesn’t feel like looking up to them, it’s more like inspiring each other.

If you could change one thing about the world what would it be?

I would likeĀ space travel to be an everyday thing. How amazing would it be to just take a trip to the moon?

If you could have one superpower what would it be?

Does an Iron Man suit count as a superpower?

What would be your mandatory weakness in respect to the one superpower?

I’m guessing it would be automatic updates to the onboard computer making the whole thing restart at inconvenient moments.

If you could keep one thing about the world what would it be?

The polar ice caps sounds like a good thing at the moment. Let’s hope its not too late!

If you have the ability to bring back any T.V. Show with fresh episodes but only one, what would it be?

My all time favourites are still running lucky for me. It would be great to see new episodes of Monkey though!

Marvel or DC or Other?

Got to be Marvel right now I’m afraid. Although I do like a little 2000A.D. now and then too.

What are your favorite fandoms?

Star Wars and Doctor Who are my all time favourites.

What Are Your Inspirations?

There are so many! All kinds of Sci-fi and awesome movies obviously, but anything can inspire you. We live in a world so full of awesome stuff, you just have to keep your eyes and your mind open and soak it all up.

What is your favorite accredited charity?

Again too many do such great things that I wish I could mention them all. If I have to narrow it down, I’m going for Great Ormond Street Hospital.

What software do you use for making designs? Any drawing tablets?

I start on paper, then over to Illustrator and yes I do have a tablet. Mice are great for pointing, but not for doodling.

Would like to shout out to other artists?

Keep doodling guys!
